I'm getting my life together basically after a dark phase i had a year ago. I got my career back on track, I'm back at University and now I'm looking to get my personal life moving... I don't know exactly what to look for or expect, but I'm game for a learning curve :)

I find self-description very interesting simply because most people, myself included, possess such limited self-knowledge; and regarding that which we do know, we are generally immensely dishonest with ourselves about it. That said, I can tell you that I think I am easy going, funny, hard-working, thoughtful, intelligent and an all-around high-quality human being. I can tell you that I prefer a few close friends to many acquaintances, and that I value strong interpersonal connections. You will of course take from that what you choose. Perhaps I will achieve my aim, and you will find my curiosity intriguing. Maybe you’ll just think I’m a nerd, and sound kind of douchey. All of which leads me to my next point…

Perhaps my point would be better served with the clich? “actions speak louder than words”, but eagles are far more majestic than clich?s. What I am getting at is that when we deal with defining ourselves, we have all of our opinions and justifications and illusions to slight our judgment; the real truth of who we are comes out in our actions. So while we may have endless thoughts, ideas and potential within, it only exists for us individually. Only what comes out is real. Based on this premise, I would say that other people tend to know far more about us than we do about ourselves. One of my closest friends, when asked to describe me, said “I would say that you are compassionate, and a great friend. I’d say I’d trust you with anything, and I know that you’re someone who will always be there for the ones you care about.” Once again, make of that what you will. Some objective facts about me : I am a student at Grant MacEwan University, pursuing an Aviation Management Diploma. I have a Commercial Pilot License and am currently working on a Flight Instructor Rating. I have recently become more interested in wellness and am generally at the gym every second or third day. Some of my vices are sleeping in, high-quality television, and getting lost in thought.
Finally, much the same as we encounter inaccuracy in defining ourselves, I think that there is a great disconnect between what attracts us to others and what we say is attractive. The tendency is to grasp at definition and quantification, when we don’t fully understand what it is that makes a satisfying or lasting connection. While common interest is a fine place to start, I find that the things that cause attraction go much deeper. In the book Blink by Malcolm Gladwell, there is a far more articulate and scientifically grounded exploration of this idea than I could hope to provide; I highly recommend it. Now, as much as I may be completely wrong, I get to outline what I imagine my ideal match might be like. I look for characteristics like intellect, compassion, integrity, patience and unique perspective. Someone who is able to form, explain and defend their own opinions, while being open to those of others would be ideal. A healthy curiosity and desire for greater understanding, a sense of adventure and a well-developed sense of humor are all qualities that I value. Someone who can laugh at themselves and be silly, while also possessing a more sober and thoughtful side would likely have an easier time relating to me. Last, though far from least, I would like to find someone who I can actually sleep with – and I do mean sleep. While this might sound odd, it has been a recurring problem for me.
