Date men and women from Canada / British Columbia / Port Alberni, 56 year old

Date a man from Canada. A little about me. I was born in Hamburg, Germany. When I was nine years old, my parents decided to emigrate to Canada. All I knew about Canada at the time was that on maps it was the white area north of the United States of America. Since my father had accepted a position with the National Research Council things happened quickly and two weeks later we were aboard the M.V. Trans Pacific bound for Montreal. I quickly learned that white was an appropriate for colour for Canada in early April. Sailing up the Saint Lawrence River, there was snow everywhere. We lived in Ottawa for three years and in 1968 my father was transferred to the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory in Victoria. We travelled a lot in those days so I quickly got the travel bug. I am a little bit of a rolling stone, having lived in places as diverse as a hill top in the Azir Mountains of Saudi Arabia to Yellowknife NWT. Mostly though, I need to be near the water. This year I am making a big move, from land to sea. I am selling my house and buying a sailboat to live aboard.
No I have not lost my mind completely. My father is 83 years old and has been living alone since my mother died of cancer 22 years ago. He recently lost his driver’s licence so I am spending a fair bit of time travelling between Port Alberni and Victoria. The sensible thing to do is move to Victoria so I can be there for him (as well as one of my daughters and her daughter). My father and I are very different and living together would drive both around the bend. The cost of housing in Victoria is prohibitively high so buying is out of the question, similarly renting is also expensive. But for about half of the cost of a bachelor’s suite I can moor a 35 foot boat. My housing problem is solved and I can go sailing any time. As they like to say a win-win situation. One problem though is to find someone to share this dream with.
A little about you. You have a sense of adventure and an open mind. You have a sense of humour and are by nature a positive person. You are intelligent and understand the art of compromise. You interested in the world around and interesting to be with. You have not lost your sense of play or wonder. You do not suffer unduly from claustrophobia, agoraphobia, motion sickness, and if you see yourself as religious you can except that others do not share your views and still manage to be descent people. Physically you would feel less crowded if you are less than 5’06” in height and physically fit, especially since sailing can be hard work at times.
A little about us. On rereading this I find it amazingly dry reading. In fact if you have read this far thank you, I owe you a glass of wine or any other beverage. I should mention that I do have a sense of humour, well at least I been told I do. Also after 55 years I have managed to hold onto my sense of wonder and sometimes play as well. I am a romantic by nature and tend to like public displays of affection. I spent most working life working with technical equipment and in sales. I enjoy (for the most part) dealing with people. My idea of a first date depends where you are. If you are in the Victoria area and weather permits a walk along any beach or breakwater followed by a meal or coffee or vice versa meal or/and coffee first. If you elsewhere on the Island I will let you suggest since you know the area.
