Outside of work, I try to experience life to the fullest and try different things. Some of the neat things I have tried include: travelling to different countries, learning new languages, outdoorsy activities (skiing and snowboarding), public speaking/debating (currently in Toastmasters), taking ballroom, latin dancing and cooking classes, different cuisines, listening and playing music, and playing different sports. Although I have tried (and surprisingly not embarrassed myself at) many different activities, here are my top 3 passions:
1) Staying fit/playing sports. I used to play sports all of the time (squash, tennis, ball hockey, softball, football), but now enjoy running and swimming (3-4 times a week).
2) Music: If I am not listening to it (I can be found bopping my head/chair dancing at work), dancing to it, singing to it (mainly in private to spare others) then I am playing it. I took organ lessons for 9 years, and have been taking guitar lessons for almost 3 years now. I am just waiting to be good enough to play in a band, or at a coffee house, though this is taking longer than I had thought
3) Travelling/learning languages. I have been to Western Canada, US, Europe, New Zealand, Australia, Egypt, China, Mexico and Vietnam. I also love learning languages and now am almost fluent in French, Vietnamese, and Spanish.
For me, everything does come down to who you are with, and I love spending time with my family and friends. They are the best! I have been lucky to make great friends from all of my adventures and hobbies, but I do tend to more time with my friends back home. They cheer me up/encourage me when I am having an off-day, and poke fun of my, er, “short-comings” so I don’t become full of myself :)
