I already knew what he wanted. They all wanted the same thing... an entry for that dating site. I looked at him, and i knew it wasn't going to be easy. Alex was the young fellow's name. Clad in dark, roughly 6 feet tall, long hair, as many ears as he had eyes, which was to say two. Frankly, describing fellow males wasn't my stong suit, so i just snatched a picture of him, which I would add to his profile later.
Geeks weren't an easy lot to deal with, description wise. What with all their computer and trivia and games. I barely knew where to start. A smooth symphony coming from the bar across the street accompanied me as I browsed through his file. I asked:
''Do you like music?
-Well I'm a musician, sorta.
-Really now... trumpet, guitar?
-Piano, actually.
-You play jazz? I inquired.
-Euhm... no, sorry, mostly tv shows and video game music.
-Jazz video games?
-I'm not entirely sure jazz video games are an actual thing, to be honest...''
I sighed. This was going to be one hell of a long film noir recreation. I lit myself a smoke, offered him one. He denied it, said he didn't touch that stuff. As the smell of narcotine and cancer-to-be slowly filled the room, i took a quick look at his portfolio. He briefly mentionned he was studying to become an animator. Curious, I took a quick look at his work. Drawings, sketches, a few paintings. One of them was a portrait of Rorschach. Efficient guy, if a bit drastic. I worked with him once in the 80's, briefly.
''That guy you painted, you ever met him in person?
-Wait, what? That's from the Watchmen graphic novel, this guy isn't even real.
-Neither is love, i muttered. And yet here you are, in my office, asking for a dating site profile.
-This is confusing. Can we just list my interests quickly and be done with it?

Kids those days... No respect for ambiance, or good, honest detective work. They just wanted results. But he was the one with the check, so i hurried along. I started fast-reading his files. The guy was an avid tabletop-rpg fan. He loved boardgames, Video games, movies, music. He was fond of tv shows. Mostly drama and comedy. He gave me long list. I simply added ''likes tv shows and whatnot''.
''Wait, aren't you gonna talk about the shows i like the most? I mean, shouldn't we list, yaknow, details about my life?.
-Listen, kid, girls are reading this because they want to know if you are a nerdy guy or a tan addict from Jersey shore, not your favorite kind of cereals listed in alphabetic order. Plus, all your shows are stupid, except maybe Dexter.
-Let me guess, because of the gritty monologues?
-Precisely
-That's silly, Community has a full episode that's an homage to detective flicks, doesn't that count for something?
-Look, buddy, if you want to make a silly entry where you clumsily name every movie, book, and milkshake flavor you ever enjoyed, be my guess. Otherwise let me do my job.
-Fine, fine...
From there on, he remained silent as I finished his description, filling blanks and checking boxes. A few minutes later, we were done. I packaged everything, and handed his file to the client.

I was standing near the window in my office, gazing upon the black-and-whiteness of the city when he came back. Alex. He asked about the girl, and what if we should add a part that states what he seeks in a woman.

-Listen... I'll be honest here. From the moment we went with the whole ''narrator and dialogue'' thing, it was basically a make or break. Either the girl found it entertaining, stayed till the end, and she'll ask about all the details we forgot herself, or she's long gone.
-But... but I made a list! Can you add that I need the girl to be ''Witty, inteligent, funny and curious''?
